After dealing with a chaotic year, my usual ways of handling stress became inefficient. I developed anger issues and several health problems, such as insomnia and a weakened immune system. I decided to take my therapist's advice and enroll myself in a martial arts class. I started googling for martial arts studios and gyms that are nearby my apartment complex. Most of them are 16 miles away from my home; I didn't find the commute time ideal. I chose the Black belt USA Studio that is a 3-mile drive away from my apartment.
I was not expecting to receive much intensity on the first day of class. Boy, was I wrong! Not only did I learned some fundamental moves, but I also practiced what I learned on a heavy punching bag by doing explosive, grueling drills. I was so exhausted, I had to drive to the nearest gas station to buy and chug two large water bottles. I took a long shower and went to bed straight afterward. I slept like a baby that night.
After a month of practicing Muay Thai, I've come to learn several new things about myself:
I was shredding body fat and building muscle at the same time.
My ability to keep my emotions in check has strengthened to a more superior level.
My self-discipline increased.
My hip mobility increased.
My self-confidence increased. I found myself speaking up in meetings, carry long conversations, be more extroverted amongst friends, and be more assertive amongst people in general.
Taking up Muay Thai is definitely one of the best self-improvement decisions I made for 2021!
As someone who use to practice taekwondo, good on you for the take to improve your self body/mind wise.
