A Packing List for The Abyss

In Life, when you're trying to do what's best for yourself, succeeding is like winning a Vegas Blackjack game. Not only would you win the game, but you'd also win back your bets. To start the game, you have to risk what you hold dear. You risk your future, money, and well-being - whether or not you realize this. Obviously, if you don't win, you lose - and the consequences can be brutal. The game I played was the Corporate World; I risked my future, money, and well-being to win the best for myself in 2018, and I lost big-time. I was betrayed and laid off. This blow, combined with the anxiety that comes from the ambiguity of obtaining another job, is enough to send you to the Abyss. In this case, I am sent back (that story is for another time). Here's a suggested list that I have compiled for survival and thriving.

  • Boots: For rough terrain and kicking a monster's teeth inward. Boots can offer superb protection and delivery of melee damage.

  • Hammock: Sleeping on the ground is terrible for the back. I would have suggested a sleeping bag, but a sleeping bag can't rock you to sleep.

  • Survival Axe: To cut wood and fend off danger.

  • Journal: You'll need something to record new knowledge, cathartic rants, and drawings.

  • Flashlight: Watch your step.

  • Roses: "...Throw roses into the abyss and say: 'Here is my thanks to the monster who didn't succeed in swallowing me alive!'"

Something to keep in mind: no matter how badly you want to forget about the experience, retain what you learned. The world outside of the Abyss won't be prepared for someone with such knowledge.

Now pack up, survive, and kick ass on the side!
